In high school, I held the belief that true wealth boiled down to owning a collection of expensive items. Often, I thought that showing off these things would earn me respect and admiration from others. However, this perception is far from reality.
Merely showcasing material wealth did not garner genuine respect from others. Instead, people often overlooked the extravagant display and focused more on their aspirations. It became evident that people don’t care about the individual who wears a fancy suit or drives a fast car. Rather, they fantasize about occupying the position of wealth and status that those possessions represent.
If one seeks respect from others then one must display values such as humility, kindness, and empathy. Unlike material possessions, which are fleeting and shallow, these traits leave a lasting impression, garnering genuine respect from those around you.
